“Sr.”
PRE-RECORDED CONVERSATION WITH DIRECTOR CHRIS SMITH
From documentarian Chris Smith (American Movie) comes a loving and illuminating look at the life, work and last days of maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., whose rebel spirit infused five decades of movies ranging from satirical 16mm underground shorts to counterculture classics Putney Swope and Greasers Palace. Captured in his final years, Downey Sr. races to complete his magnum opus, a documentary of his life culled from footage shot by Smith over three years as his son, actor and producer Robert Downey Jr., tries to learn about his father as much as possible throughout the process. Comprising scenes of daily life, Zoom chats during the height of COVID-19, clips from Downey Sr.!s films, interviews with friends, and archival footage from his life, “Sr.” is many things at once—a movie within a movie about a man who made movies like nobody else, a heartfelt ode to fatherhood from a loving son, a joyous celebration of an oddball oeuvre, and a powerful meditation on life itself. Rated R for language and some drug use. Director Chris Smith (US 2022) 89 min.
