One of Ingmar Bergman's most celebrated films, this intense drama centers on four women, as two sisters (Liv Ullmann, Ingrid Thulin) and their maid (Kari Sylwan) care for the third sister (Harriet Andersson), who is dying. Inspired by an image Bergman had of a red room in which three sisters are dressed in white, the film's power owes much to Sven Nykvist's innovative color cinematography, which won him the Oscar.
