Pauline Kael called Ingmar Bergman's first international success "one of the few classics of carnal comedy," and this romantic farce was the official basis for Stephen Sondheim's musical A Little Night Music (and undoubted inspiration for Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy).
