Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie

Just Added! One Night Only!
In Person: Director Jeremy Newberger, Bay Area Broadcast Legend James Gabbert & Musician/Downey Associate Lloyd Schoonmaker
Monday, August 26, 7:15
Before "reality" became a TV genre, there was a moment when the masses fixated on a single, sociopathic star: controversial talk-show host Morton Downey Jr. In the late 1980s, Downey tore apart the traditional talk format by turning debate of current issues into a gladiatorial arena, and this pioneer of the hysterical, confrontational style of "infotainment" attracted a rabid cult following. The fascinating documentary Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie dissects the mind and motivation of television's most notorious agitator, tracking his euphoric ascent to fame and subsequent plummet into infamy. The film features on-camera interviews with Herman Cain, Pat Buchanan, Chris Elliott, Gloria Allred, Sally Jessy Raphael, Alan Dershowitz, Curtis Sliwa, Richard Bey and Steven Pagones, as well as never-before-seen footage revealing Downey's behind-the-scenes fights and foibles. Producers/Directors: Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, Jeremy Newberger. (US 2012) 90 minutes plus discussion.

Joining director Jeremy Newberger onstage for the Q&A will be James Gabbert and Lloyd Schoonmaker. Gabbert is the veteran broadcast executive who ran KOFY-TV and other stations and knew Downey. Schoonmaker is a musician and songwriter who wrote the music and lyrics for the album Morton Downey Jr. Sings! and, as his close friend, was with him at SFO, the day of Downey's public downfall. Schoonmaker even promises to perform a couple songs!
