Based on a true story, this darkly sensual drama features French pop star Soko as Augustine, a 19-year-old kitchen maid in Belle Epoque Paris who suffers an inexplicable seizure and is shipped off to an all-female psychiatric hospital specializing in the then-fashionable diagnosis of "hysteria." Vincent Lindon co-stars as Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot, the renowned 19th century neurologist (and teacher of Sigmund Freud), who is intrigued by Augustine when she suffers another attack that appears to give her intense physical pleasure. Charcot begins using her as his principal subject, hypnotizing her in lecture halls in front of his fellow doctors. A chronicle of one woman's sexual awakening against the backdrop of Victorian psychology and sexual repression, Alice Winocour'sstriking first feature also explores the blurring of the line between doctor and patient.
