Frances Ha

Filmmaker Noah Baumbach and rising star Greta Gerwig reteam for this breezy but poignant comedy, inspired by the French New Wave (not to mention Woody Allen) and set in contemporary New York. Frances is an apprentice dancer who, at 27, has yet to negotiate her post-college identity crisis and transition into full-blown adulthood. Anchored for a while by her best friend Sophie (Mickey Sumner), Frances finds herself drifting from apartment to apartment while her friends seem to be finding better jobs and places they can afford. Baumbach leaves behind the acerbic bite of The Squid and the Whale and Greenburg, his previous film with Gerwig, and in Frances Ha their collaborative screenplay is no less moving as it spotlights Gerwig's natural radiance and self-deprecating humor. Rated R for sexual references and language. Writers: Noah Baumbach, Greta Gerwig. Director: Noah Baumbach. (US 2012) 86 min.
