SCIENCE ON SCREEN: WHAT CAPTAIN KIRK CAN TEACH US

Screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with
Presentation by Rick Hanson

Featuring a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rick Hanson, author of the bestseller Buddha's Brain, will discuss the new science around the brain's relationship to the body using the second Star Trek feature film as illustration. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the "Kobayashi Maru" scenario is the most notorious of Starfleet Academy's training exercises, in which participants must face a no-win choice between destruction and starting a war. The young James T. Kirk was the only cadet who won this war game through positive thinking. Dr. Hanson believes this film, directed by Nicholas Meyer, is "great and timely in its rejection of the Kobayashi Maru scenario of futility and defeat." Besides, it's a cracking good adventure film, starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the original crew, as well as an imposing Ricardo Montalban as Khan. (US 1982) 113 min. plus discussion.

Rick Hanson, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist who teaches about the essential inner skills of personal well-being. His book Buddha's Brain explains methods of lighting up brain circuits to relieve stress and promote positive world views.
