New Documentaries on Ingmar Bergman
...But Film Is My Mistress preceded by Images from the Playground
Filmmaker Stig Björkman in Person
Sunday, May 1, 7:00 pm
One of Sweden's leading film critics and commentators, Stig Björkman
has for several years created extraordinary documentaries on filmmakers, writers and other artists. At the Rafael he will present his most recent films, both produced by the Ingmar Bergman Foundation. The short Images from the Playground
(2009) combines Bergman's own "home movies" that he made on his movie sets with excerpts from filmed interviews with him and contemporary commentary by actresses Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson. ... But Film Is My Mistress
(2010) employs behind-the-scenes footage from Persona
to investigate Bergman's artistic essence, guided by Liv Ullmann
and with observations from a number of prominent filmmakers whom Bergman influenced, including Woody Allen, Bernardo Bertolucci, John Sayles, Olivier Assayas, Arnaud Desplechin, Martin Scorsese
and Lars von Trier
. Together these films provide a vivid and fascinating portrait of an artist who, in each new project, discovered challenges for himself and for his collaborators. Films 95 minutes plus discussion.
Special thanks to the Ingmar Bergman Foundation and Swedish Institute.
This program and Stig Björkman's visit are made possible by the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, with additional support from the Consulate General of Sweden, San Francisco.
