Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary

In Person: Filmmaker Pepita Ferrari
Thursday, September 30, 7:00
Visiting Canadian director Pepita Ferrari will present a special screening of her absorbing documentary about documentaries, Capturing Reality, which investigates the genre through encounters with some of its most influential practitioners. More than 30 filmmakers, including Albert Maysles, Errol Morris, Nick Broomfield, Joan Churchill, Kim Longinotto, Scott Hicks, Kevin Macdonald, Heddy Honigman, Peter Wintonick, Patricio Guzmán and Werner Herzog, discuss the art and ethics of their craft, while over 100 clips from important films illustrate their reflections on the nature of representing reality. The film asks significant questions, such as how much of a film can be scripted or pre-planned, and it's fascinating how different the responses can be among the experts. Capturing Reality is a fascinating look at the nonfiction filmmaker's universe. Producer: Michelle van Beusekom. Director: Pepita Ferrari. (Canada 2009) 96 min.

Pepita Ferrari's presentation is made possible by the support of the National Film Board of Canada.
