Denise Zmekhol in Person!
A 2008 Mill Valley Film Festival Favorite
Wednesday, March 10, 7:15 & Thursday, March 11, 7:15
A native of São Paulo currently based in the Bay Area, filmmaker Denise Zmekhol will be on hand both evenings to present and discuss her fascinating 2008 documentary, in which she returns to the Amazon in search of the indigenous Surui and Negarote children she had photographed 15 years before. Recording her personal encounters, she also eloquently charts the destruction, ecological as well as cultural, brought about by decades of deforestation. Her account of the past decades includes the story of activist Chico Mendes and a recognition that the future of the Amazon rainforest is intricately linked to that of the Earth. Zmekhol will also screen a follow-up short, Trading Bows and Arrows for Laptops. In English and Portuguese with English subtitles. Films 80 min.
