Based on a true story, this vivid and exciting mountain adventure is set in 1936, when Nazi propaganda urges German climbers to achieve glory by conquering the Eiger in the Swiss Alps. Best-friends Toni Kurz (Benno Fürmann) and Andi Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas) compete with other teams in undertaking their ascent of the Eiger's North Face, also known as the "Murder Wall," while press and gawkers observe in comfort from a hotel terrace below. Filmmaker Philipp Stölzl skillfully balances their personal stories and the political setting with breathtaking, high-stakes climbing sequences (which critics have compared favorably with Touching the Void), as the men find themselves in a race against time and the forces of nature. With Johanna Wokalek, Ulrich Tukur. In German with English subtitles. (Germany 2008) 121 min.
