Thursday, February 4, 6:45 & 9:00
Bay Area filmmaker Peter Esmonde presents and discusses his absorbing documentary about German-American artist and inventor Trimpin, who creates wonders out of junk and shuns the commercial art world, although his sculpture and musical experiments are cherished throughout the world. Filmed over two years, this highly entertaining portrait follows Trimpin as he designs a tower of 500 electric guitars, builds an ensemble of marimbas that convert real-time earthquake data into music, and collaborates with the Kronos Quartet on a composition featuring toy instruments. Following the recent Mill Valley Film Festival, Dennis Harvey of Variety compared the film to Rivers and Tides as a portrayal of "an original mind whose process is fascinating..." Film 80 minutes plus discussion.
