Modern Times

Part of the Everybody's Classics Series
Free to the Public
Sunday, November 29, 12 noon
The Rafael inaugurates a quarterly series, Everybody's Classics, featuring big-screen presentations of classic films that everyone can enjoy, offered free to the public and made possible through the support of the Koret Foundation. This series begins with Charlie Chaplin's 1936 masterwork Modern Times, screened in a restored 35mm print.

Marking the final appearance of Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character, Modern Times is the great comedian's satirical look at city life and social injustice, beginning with our hero battling an assembly line with a mind of its own, and continuing as he struggles to make a living in a dog-eat-dog world. Co-starring his beautiful off-screen partner Paulette Goddard, Modern Times is an ingenious parade of hilarious gags with a social conscience. Chaplin wrote, directed and composed the music score, which includes the melody that would become the song favorite "Smile." Film 87 minutes.

Our 35mm print is from the recent restoration of this film, which is wholly appropriate for people of all ages. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater capacity is filled.

This program is made possible in part by the Koret Foundation.
