Live Music for Silent Film!
$15 (CFI Members $12)
The ace musicians of The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra
return to celebrate the Rafael's 10th anniversary, performing for a classic Harold Lloyd
comedy presented in a beautiful 35mm print. In The Kid Brother
(1927), one of Harold Lloyd's best silents, the agile comedian plays Harold Hickory, youngest son of a rural sheriff, whose resourcefulness comes in handy as he woos a beauty (Jobyna Ralston
) from a traveling medicine show and sets out to clear his dad's reputation after the town's funds go missing. Beautifully photographed and extremely funny, The Kid Brother
is peerless for laughs and also features one of the screen's most priceless performances by a monkey.
Based in Louisville, Colorado, The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra enriches the silent film experience with authentic music of the era. Members include: Brian Collins, clarinet; Dawn Kramer, trumpet; David Short, cello; and Britt Swenson, violin; under the direction of pianist Rodney Sauer, who compiles and arranges the scores.
Mont Alto performed The Kid Brother for the first anniversary of the Rafael in 2000. Last year they opened the San Francisco Silent Film Festival with this film, and the San Francisco Chronicle's Leah Garchik wrote: " The music was so terrific it could have stood separately as a concert. The film/music combo was, well, like hot fudge on a sundae."
Special thanks to Suzanne Lloyd of Harold Lloyd Entertainment, Inc. and Jaren Sapolin of Sony Pictures Repertory. Mont Alto are featured performers (with different films) at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, July 10-12 at the Castro Theatre.
