The Films of My Life - Andrew Stanton

Ryan's Daughter
Wednesday, June 3, 6:30
We all have films that are personal favorites. For professional filmmakers and artists, these treasures could be inspirations or influences... or they could simply provide warm comfort. During the Rafael's 5th anniversary, we asked some prominent filmmakers to present their special films. To celebrate our 10th, we have also approached writers and other artists. Inspired by French filmmaker François Truffaut, a lover of film who called his collected criticism The Films in My Life, this series emphasizes the emotional connection between the participants and the works they select.

Writer-director Andrew Stanton is one of the creative lights of the Pixar team and the director of the Academy Award-winning films Finding Nemo and WALL-E. As part of the Rafael's 10th anniversary series The Films of My Life, Stanton presents and discusses a rare screening of a classic he found influential: David Lean's Ryan's Daughter.

The penultimate epic from the director of Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean's Ryan's Daughter is set in 1916 Ireland, where revolution is in the air while World War I is waged on the continent. In a coastal village, a young woman (Sarah Miles) marries her schoolteacher and mentor (Robert Mitchum), but then falls in love with a convalescing British soldier (Christopher Jones). The winner of two Oscars, for John Mills' supporting performance and Freddie Young's cinematography, this windswept, widescreen romance also stars Trevor Howard and Leo McKern. Music: Maurice Jarre. Writer: Robert Bolt. Director: David Lean. (UK 1970) Film 195 minutes plus intermission and discussion.

Tickets: $15 (CFI Members $12)
