A theater company from Prague stages a performance of Evald Schorm's famous adaptation of Dostoevsky's masterpiece in an unusual venue- a run down steel mill in Poland. As rehearsals get under way, the story extends out to the real lives of the cast and the steel workers themselves, whose experiences begin to embody Dostoevsky's signature themes of fate, mortality and the dichotomy of faith and doubt. In this film about a play based on a book, director Petr Zelenka artfully weaves the various layers (the book, the play, the workers' reality) to create a rich and sophisticated narrative tapestry.
