Ingmar Bergman: Scenes From A Master

In association with the exhibition Ingmar Bergman: The Man Who Asked Hard Questions, as well as Mill Valley Film Festival's Tribute to Harriet Andersson, the Smith Rafael Film Center presents some riches and rarities from the career of the great Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007). Several of the films in this series feature performances by Harriet Andersson, one of the key actors with whom he collaborated.

"There's never been a girl in Swedish films who radiated more uninhibited erotic charm than Harriet," Bergman once remarked. On another occasion he declared: "Harriet's genius is almost unidentifiable. The immediacy in her portrayals and the remarkable symbiosis between her and the camera is impossible to describe in words." While it is impossible to capture the full breadth of Bergman's greatness with a relatively small number of films, this series offers some recognized classics along with work that has been little-seen in the US... or not seen here at all.

All programs are presented in Swedish language with English subtitles.
