Ingmar Bergman: The Man Who Asked Hard Questions is a multimedia installation
exploring the complex universe of one of the world's great filmmakers. Ingmar
Bergman (1918-2007) was the Swedish master of film and theater who
for six decades explored universal religious, moral and existential questions
in film masterpieces such as The Seventh Seal, Through a Glass Darkly, Persona,
Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander.
The installation is inspired in design by the island of Fårö, Bergman's
haven for
much of his life. From a stylized "tree" at its center, multiple
film projections
offer dramatic scenes and documentary footage reflecting the artist's
life
and work. The installation's name is borrowed from the title of Woody
Allen's
memorial tribute to the filmmaker he admired above all others.
Opening in association with Mill Valley Film Festival's Tribute
to Harriet
Andersson on Friday, October 10, the installation remains on view
at the Smith
Rafael Film Center through October 19, accompanied by a retrospective of
Bergman's films, several of them featuring Harriet Andersson.
Created by the Swedish Institute, Stockholm, and presented here with its
support, Ingmar Bergman: The Man Who Asked Hard Questions is made possible
with additional support from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, the
Consulate General of Sweden, San Francisco, and the Embassy of Sweden, in
cooperation with the Ingmar Bergman Foundation
