Michael Caine and Demi Moore star in this sleek and clever diamond-heist thriller
from director Michael Radford (Il Postino,
The Merchant of Venice). In the
London of 1960, Laura Quinn (Moore) is the hardest-working executive at the
London Diamond Corporation, a mammoth gem conglomerate enmeshed in the politics
of Apartheid-era South Africa and the Cold War between the Soviet Union and
the West. Despite the valuable counsel she always offers the company chairman
(Joss Ackland), Laura is constantly hitting the glass ceiling and being passed
over for advancement. She finds unlikely career advice from Hobbs (Caine),
the company’s longtime night janitor, who proposes a little visit to
the vault based on their combined knowledge of the company’s workings.
(Just a thermos full of diamonds, that’s all.) However, neither the caper
nor the aftermath goes as smoothly as planned, and they find themselves in
the thick of an intense investigation by Detective Finch (Lambert
Wilson).
And Laura discovers that her amiable old partner has a few surprises in store.
