Director David Lean’s follow-up to Great Expectations was another
Charles Dickens masterpiece, and this adaptation is as vivid and beautifully
realized as its predecessor. Dominated by the atmosphere of workhouses and
lowlife in Victorian London and by the striking performance of Alec
Guinness as Fagin, the tale of the poor waif Oliver (played by John
Howard Davies) also
boasts superlative turns by Robert Newton as Bill Sikes, Kay
Walsh as Nancy
and a young Anthony Newley as the Artful Dodger. Camera:
Guy Green. Director: David Lean (UK 1948) 116 min.
