10-piece ensemble performing for
VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS
Wednesday, October 31, 8:00
$12 (CFI members $10)
Celebrate Halloween with a “fairy tale head-trip” as The
Valerie Project perform their newly composed score for the film Valerie
and Her Week of Wonders, one of the most artful and erotic fantasy/horror movies ever made,
screened in a beautiful archival 35mm print.
Considered by many to be the last film of the Czech New Wave, this 1970 film
about a young girl’s coming of age is a luminous and colorful dream narrative
shot through with folklore, vampires, doppelgangers, lecherous priests and
shimmering maidens. The New York Times called it “an Aquarian stew of
Freud, Murnau, Hefner and the Brothers Grimm.” Directed by Jaromil
Jares,
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is a cult classic ripe for The Valerie Project,
whose new score provides a sonic crucible through which the film’s folk
narrative blossoms and evolves.
Based in Philadelphia, The Valerie Project is a 10-piece chamber-rock ensemble
culled from members of Espers, Fern Knight, Woodwose and Fursaxa. Musicians
include: Greg Weeks (electric guitar, metallophon, keyboards, recorder); Margie
Wienk (cello, harmonium, vocals): Mary Lattimore (concert harp); Helena
Espvall (cello, vocals); Brooke Sietinsons (acoustic guitar, omnichord, space echo,
bells, autoharp); Tara Burke (vocals); Jessica
Weeks (flute, keyboards); Jim
Ayre (percussion); Jesse Sparhawk (bass); Brian
Andrews (sound board).
Don’t miss this rare opportunity. Program length is approximately 80
minutes.
