Julie Delpy’s first feature film as director is a terrifically entertaining,
cross-cultural romantic comedy. Delpy co-stars with Adam Goldberg as Marion
and Jack, a New York-based couple who follow a less-than-perfect Venetian vacation
with a brief stop in her native Paris to meet her folks. Jack, who doesn’t
speak a word of French, is confounded by Marion’s bohemian parents (played
by Delpy’s own parents), and becomes downright neurotic when confronted
with what appears to be her endless stream of ex-boyfriends. Although the premise
might remind you of Delpy’s participation in Before Sunrise and Before
Sunset, this frequently hilarious film is an authentic original, and Delpy’s
script mines a wealth of material from the characters’ sexual fireworks
and the love-hate dynamic between French and American culture. In English and
French with English subtitles. Rated R for sexual content, some nudity and
language. With Daniel Brühl, Marie Pillet, Albert Delpy. Music/Editor/Writer/Director:
Julie Delpy. (France/Germany 2007) 96 min.
