35th Anniversary presentation!

Thursday, February 2, 7:00 Filmmaker Lucy Massie Phenix In Person (Feb. 1 only)
This historic documentary is a record of the “Winter Soldier Investigation”
conducted by Vietnam Veterans Against the War in February 1971, shortly after
revelations of the My Lai massacre. With support from Jane Fonda and Mark Lane,
more than 125 veterans converged on Detroit to speak out against atrocities
they had committed and witnessed while stationed in Vietnam. Although the Investigation
marked a turning point in the anti-war movement, all broadcast networks (including
PBS) declined to show it, and the film remained virtually unknown in the US
until last year’s presidential campaign of participant John Kerry.
Made by a collective of 19 filmmakers (including Lucy Massie Phenix,
appearing at Wednesday’s screening), it is still relevant in the era of
Abu Ghraib. Giving the San Francisco Chronicle’s highest rating in 2005,
critic Jonathan Curiel wrote: “Winter Soldier is a rare time capsule of
collective dissent. Bravery, too.” Producer/Director: Winterfilm
