Saturday, January 29, 7:30
$15 ($12 CFI Members, Seniors and Children 12 & Under)
We are delighted to welcome the return of visual effects legend Ray
Harryhausen in his third public appearance at the Smith Rafael Film
Center, to celebrate the release of his new DVD set Ray Harryhausen: The
Early Years. Celebrated for his stop-motion animation artistry on such
classic adventures as The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts
and Clash of the Titans, Harryhausen has been a major influence
for literally every filmmaker working in the fantasy genre.
At the Rafael, Harryhausen will discuss his career and show footage from his
earliest work, including material restored by the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences: the Mother Goose Stories and Fairy Tales; wartime
Army training films; and tests for unrealized projects such as Baron Munchausen,
The War of the Worlds and The Elementals. Joining him on stage
are two of his protégés: Oscar-winning visual effects artist and
director Phil Tippett, and historian Arnold Kunert,
who is co-producer of the extensive new DVD set.
