Presented by George Lucas
Thursday, April 29, 6:30 (Please note: This event is sold out. There will be a "Rush Line" night of the show, however ticket availability is not guaranteed.)
On the film’s 50th anniversary, filmmaker George Lucas will screen and discuss Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai, an action epic that remains without equal. Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura star in this classic tale of a band of samurai warriors who unite to save a defenseless village from a horde of marauding bandits. Lucas first encountered Kurosawa’s work in film school: “Seven Samurai made an extraordinary impact on me. I had never seen anything that powerful or cinematographic. The emotions were so strong that it didn’t matter that I did not understand the culture or the traditions. From that moment on, Kurosawa’s films have served as one of my strongest sources of creative inspiration.” Lucas later had the opportunity to give something back to his hero when he served as an executive producer of Kurosawa’s Kagemusha and provided Industrial Light + Magic’s services for the visual effects in Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams. In Japanese with English subtitles. Director: Akira Kurosawa. (Japan 1954) 201 min., plus discussion.
Tickets for each event in The Films of My Life - $10 ($8 Film Institute Members & Seniors)
