DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

2008 Mill Valley Film Festival
Options for both part time and full time seasonal positions
Reports To: Corporate Development Manager & Director

Part-time and full-time seasonal internships are available.

We are looking for candidates with minimum availability of one full day a week from July 15th, 2008. Ideally candidates will be able to offer more availability closer to the Festival dates (2nd – 12th October).

Summary:
The California Film Institute is seeking interns to provide administrative and on-site assistance to the Development department in the run up to and during the 31st annual Mill Valley Film Festival. The Development Department manages numerous relationships with high level sponsors, individuals and in kind partners.

This internship is an excellent opportunity for a hard-working and motivated individual to gain valuable experience assisting with key accounts at one of the foremost Film Festivals in the country. Individuals will get a hands-on understanding of non-profit organizations.

Responsibilities include:
• Providing administrative support for activities within the Development Department.
• Supporting the creation of accurate, well-documented tracking of sponsors, and associated benefits.
• Supporting the collecting and tracking sponsors’ recognition for print, events, tickets, electronic and product placement.
• Supporting on-site hospitality and events at the Festival.
• Support breakdown and delivery of all sponsorship signage on site at the Festival.

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities:
• Keen attention to detail; superb organizational and administrative skills
• Strong multi-tasking ability
• Professional demeanor in email and on the phone.
• Comfortable in a fast-paced atmosphere, working with moving deadlines and under pressure
• Ability to manage time effectively and bring projects to completion
• Must be able to drive to and from Mill Valley and San Rafael (Most work will require working in the downtown San Rafael office).
• Proficient in Excel and Word

Compensation:
This is unpaid internship, however course credit may be available. There may be the opportunity to participate in special projects according to each intern’s areas of interest or expertise. Interns receive complementary tickets to the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Smith Rafael Film Center as well as a CFI membership.
Interns interested in non-profits will find this internship an excellent learning opportunity. Previous interns have not only worked in our offices during the planning stages, they have held positions of responsibility during the Film Festival itself and other California Film Institute events, received glowing letters of recommendation, and the appearance of the Mill Valley Film Festival on their resume has assisted them in obtaining jobs in related fields.

MVFF COMMUNITY OUTREACH INTERN

Seasonal Internship

The Mill Valley Film Festival is seeking an intern to assist with marketing specialized films to community groups. We request that interns be available to devote a minimum of 8-12 hours a week, Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Start time August 1 continuing through the Festival Oct. 4 -14th.

Program Outreach
• Brainstorm with programming department to develop lists of target audiences
• Write template letter to organizations
• Determine benefits package offered in exchange for cooperation
• Review calendar for niche marketing
Administration
• Review and update niche marketing plan
• Review contacts in marketing databases
• Update contacts that currently exist, including Consulates
• Develop calendar and timeline for mailings and email blasts
• Develop final mailing lists and email lists
• Send out follow-up letters and emails
Direct Mail Campaign
• Develop flyers for specialized film
• Coordinate with Marketing and Publicity so that there is no duplication of effort
• Send out letters in early September
Email Blast Campaign
• Develop email text for email blasts
• Send out first email three weeks before opening night
• Follow-up email one week before opening night
• Final email the day before the Festival opens
At Festival
• Meet with contacts at the theatre
• Serve as trouble-shooter as needs arrive
Post Festival
• Write thank you letters with Festival wrap & dates for 2008 MVFF

Qualifications
• Must be highly organized and detail oriented with attention to accuracy
• Comfortable working under pressure and driving deadlines
• Proficiency in Filemaker, Word on a Mac platform, design experience with photoshop preferred
• Thorough understanding of the Internet
• Interest in Film

Compensation
This is unpaid internship, however course credit may be available. There may be the opportunity to participate in special projects according to each intern’s areas of interest or expertise. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to film marketing and promotions. Interns receive complementary tickets to the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Smith Rafael Film Center as well as a CFI membership.

MILL VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL EDUCATION INTERN

Seasonal Internship
Reports to Education Manager

The California Film Institute seeks an intern to support its Education program during the 2006 Mill Valley Film Festival. The intern would work closely with the CFI Education manager on the Festival’s In-Schools Program. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the inner workings of one of the top film festivals in the country and to meet filmmakers in a one-on-one setting.

We request that interns be available to devote a minimum of 8-12 hours a week, Monday through Friday. There will be a flexible schedule during the festival.

Primary duties will include:
• Provide general programming support to the Education manager for the Festival’s In-Schools program.
• Coordinate filmmaker visits to schools in Marin, San Francisco and the East Bay.
• Assist with scheduling films
• Host filmmakers at the Festival’s In-Schools Program events.
• Provide or arrange transportation for visiting filmmakers
• Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Self motivated, energetic, film-wise, good with children and teens

Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship, however course credit may be available. There may be the opportunity to participate in special projects according to each intern’s areas of interest or expertise. Complementary tickets to the Mill Valley Film Festival, membership with the California Film Institute, as well as other perks will be included for your time. Intern will be compensated for gas and tolls when transporting filmmakers.

MARKETING & PUBLICITY INTERN

Mill Valley Film Festival
Seasonal Position
Reports to MVFF Marketing Manager

The Mill Valley Film Festival is now in its 31st year and is seeking an intern to assist in the Marketing & Publicity Department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain an intensive work experience in a short amount of time, especially for those thinking of a career in for-profit or non-profit publicity, public relations, arts or entertainment industry marketing, advertising or working in independent film.We request that interns be available to devote a minimum of 20+ hours a week, Monday through Friday during normal business hours from August through through October 31st. Scheduling of work can be flexible depending on candidate.

Primary duties:
• assist with compilation of publicity and marketing materials for publicity partners and publications
• provide general administrative support to the Marketing & Publicity Department (filing, faxing, copying, assist with mailings, sending emails, researching contact names/numbers and general correspondence)
• assist with coordination and running of Festival Press Conference
• help identify positive press coverage to promote Festival
• assist in scheduling in-house photographers during the Festival
• assist in working with the Filmmaker Liaison to help schedule filmmaker interviews with journalists
• help create and post news stories to MVFF website for “Seen at the Festival” page
• assist in the preparation of press clippings; closing packets for publicity partners, programming department and filmmakers
• assist Programming Department in the organizing publicity materials and making video dubs
• additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• must be highly organized and detail oriented with attention to accuracy
• previous marketing, business communications and/or publicity experience helpful but not necessary
• self-starter with an ability to take ownership of project and see it through to completion
• excellent verbal and written communication skills and a good sense of humor
• comfortable working under pressure and driving deadlines and meeting deadlines
• proficiency in Filemaker, Word and Excel on a Mac platform
• experience in graphic and/or Web design helpful but not required
• thorough understanding of the Internet and its use as a marketing and promotion tool
• interest in independent films useful but not required – please note that this is not a film production internship
• positive, “can-do” attitude essential
